Group Leader (Principal Investigator) – Computational & Systems Biomedicine / Bioinformatics
Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM) | Lisbon & Oeiras, Portugal
Application deadline: 30 September 2026 | Start date: Flexible

Open Call for Research Group Leaders | The Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM) (gimm.pt) invites applications for a Group Leader (PI) position to establish an independent research program that addresses biomedically important questions using advanced bioinformatic and computational approaches as a primary methodology. We welcome candidates whose work combines method innovation with deep biological insight and a clear path to impact on human health.

GIMM’s research is organized across two complementary programs: GIMM Discovery, focused on fundamental biology, and GIMM CARE, dedicated to clinical and applied research, including translational studies and partnerships with the healthcare ecosystem. The successful candidate will join a highly collaborative environment spanning basic, translational, and clinical research.

Research Scope

We welcome applicants addressing fundamental or translational questions across biomedical research. Strong candidates will develop and/or apply advanced computational approaches, including but not restricted to machine learning/AI and network or systems biology, to extract biological insight from rapidly expanding, data-rich omics and imaging technologies and to improve their interpretation and impact.

Applicants are encouraged to articulate how their research program will interface with GIMM’s Discovery and/or CARE activities, including opportunities to collaborate with experimental and clinical colleagues.

What we offer

  • A competitive start-up package and dedicated laboratory/office space.
  • Access to state-of-the-art core facilities and strong institutional support for data-intensive research.
  • A vibrant, interdisciplinary scientific community across GIMM Discovery and GIMM CARE.
  • Support for grant acquisition, technology development, and partnership building.
  • An inclusive environment with strong mentoring and career development opportunities.

We seek candidates who:

  • Have an outstanding track record of research excellence and creativity.
  • Present a compelling, independent research vision with biomedical relevance.
  • Demonstrate strong expertise in computational and statistical analysis of biological and/or clinical datasets.
  • Show the potential to build and lead a team and contribute to GIMM’s collaborative culture.
  • Are committed to open, rigorous, and reproducible research practices.

We welcome applications from candidates at different career stages, including advanced postdoctoral fellows ready to transition to independence and more established investigators.

Applicants should submit a single PDF including:

We seek candidates who demonstrate:

  1. Cover letter describing research focus and fit to GIMM (including links to Discovery and/or CARE).
  2. Curriculum vitae (including publications, funding, and mentoring experience).
  3. Research statement (max 3–5 pages) outlining the scientific vision, planned program, and potential collaborative interfaces at GIMM.
  4. Names and contact details of 3–5 referees (letters may be requested later).

How to apply

Applications should be submitted on this page or by email to [contact email] with the subject line: “Group Leader – Bioinformatics (GIMM)”.

Informal enquiries are welcome and can be directed to Moisés Mallo (executive.committee@gimm.pt).

Application Deadline: 30 September 2026
