The evaluation considers the candidate&#8217;s merit and motivation, assessed based on the documents submitted in the application. Subsequently, the panel will meet to deliberate. Eligible applications will be scored on a scale of 1 to 20 for each of the following evaluation criteria:<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4\"><b data-index-in-node=\"0\" data-path-to-node=\"4\">Criterion A \u2013 CV reflecting the academic, scientific, and professional background (Weight: 50%)<\/b><\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"5\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,0,0\"><b data-index-in-node=\"0\" data-path-to-node=\"5,0,0\">Sub-criterion A1: Final Grade (25%)<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,0,0\">The score for this sub-criterion is calculated based on the final grades listed in the academic degree certificates submitted by the candidate in the application form, according to Table 1. The grade to be considered is the one stated in the respective degree certificates or, where applicable, in the certificates of degree recognition and grade conversion to the Portuguese scale.<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"5,0,1\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,0,1,0,0\"><b data-index-in-node=\"0\" data-path-to-node=\"5,0,1,0,0\">Rounding Rules:<\/b>\u00a0For certificates where the final grade includes decimals, the value will be rounded to the nearest whole number: if the decimal is 5 or higher, it is rounded up; if it is lower than 5, the whole number is maintained.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,0,1,1,0\"><b data-index-in-node=\"0\" data-path-to-node=\"5,0,1,1,0\">Combined Grades:<\/b>\u00a0In the case of calculating the simple arithmetic mean between a Bachelor\u2019s and a Master\u2019s grade, the actual grades on the certificates will be used (including decimals), with rounding performed only after the final average is obtained. If a certificate displays both a rounded grade and a decimal grade, the rounded grade will be used.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\"><b data-index-in-node=\"0\" data-path-to-node=\"6\">Table 1 \u2013 Scoring table for Sub-criterion A1<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11024 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/gimm.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Tabela.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"753\" height=\"423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gimm.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Tabela.jpg 753w, https:\/\/gimm.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Tabela-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 753px) 100vw, 753px\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\"><i data-index-in-node=\"0\" data-path-to-node=\"8\">*Arithmetic mean of the grades of both degrees.<\/i><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\"><b data-index-in-node=\"48\" data-path-to-node=\"8\">Note:<\/b>\u00a0Candidates with foreign degrees who do not provide a degree recognition document including proof of grade conversion to the Portuguese scale will still be evaluated, and\u00a0will be awarded the minimum grade for BSc. or MSc. on sub-criteria A2.<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"9\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9,0,0\"><b data-index-in-node=\"0\" data-path-to-node=\"9,0,0\">Sub-criterion A2: Scientific and professional career (25%)<\/b><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10\"><b data-index-in-node=\"0\" data-path-to-node=\"10\">Criterion B \u2013 Motivation Letters (Weight: 35%)<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10\">The evaluation of the motivation letters considers the motivation to apply for this specific Program; how the Program can contribute to individual career development; and the alignment of individual professional goals with the objectives of GIMM.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11\"><b data-index-in-node=\"0\" data-path-to-node=\"11\">Criterion C \u2013 Letters of Recommendation (Weight: 15%)<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11\">The evaluation of the recommendation letters focuses on the candidate&#8217;s intellectual curiosity and scientific commitment, academic curriculum, and research experience and competence.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12\">Candidates approved in the first phase (with a score of\u00a0<b data-index-in-node=\"81\" data-path-to-node=\"12\">14 or higher<\/b>) will be invited to the\u00a0<b data-index-in-node=\"118\" data-path-to-node=\"12\">second eliminatory phase<\/b>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"accordion-header\" id=\"header-second-phase-general-interview\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<button class=\"accordion-button collapsed\" type=\"button\" data-bs-toggle=\"collapse\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdata-bs-target=\"#second-phase-general-interview\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\taria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"second-phase-general-interview\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Second Phase: General Interview<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"second-phase-general-interview\" class=\"accordion-collapse collapse\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\tdata-bs-parent=\"#accordion\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion-body\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The <strong>second eliminatory phase<\/strong> consists of an interview with at least three members of the selection panel. Subsequently, the panel will deliberate on the interview performance and evaluate each candidate according to the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Criterion A (15%):<\/strong> Familiarity with the scientific topics and projects integrated into GIMM.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Criterion B (30%):<\/strong> Ability to discuss and critically analyze scientific work produced to date, namely the capacity to identify and analyze strengths and weaknesses; ambition and future plans.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Criterion D (20%):<\/strong> General scientific knowledge and interests.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Criterion E (10%):<\/strong> English proficiency \u2013 fluency, articulation, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"accordion-header\" id=\"header-third-phase-project-specific-interview\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<button class=\"accordion-button collapsed\" type=\"button\" data-bs-toggle=\"collapse\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdata-bs-target=\"#third-phase-project-specific-interview\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\taria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"third-phase-project-specific-interview\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Third Phase: Project-Specific Interview<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"third-phase-project-specific-interview\" class=\"accordion-collapse collapse\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\tdata-bs-parent=\"#accordion\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion-body\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Candidates approved in the second phase (with a score of <strong>14 or higher<\/strong>) will proceed to the third phase. This stage consists of an individual interview for each project selected by the candidate during the application process.<\/p>\n<p>Each interview will be conducted by three members of the selection panel, including the Group Leader of the specific topic. The panel composition for each project will remain the same, except in unforeseen circumstances requiring a substitution. Candidates are evaluated based on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Criterion A (30%):<\/strong> Academic, scientific, and professional merit, and its suitability for the chosen topic.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Criterion B (30%):<\/strong> Motivation for applying to the specific topic.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Criterion C (40%):<\/strong> Specific knowledge in the candidate\u2019s area of study.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"accordion-header\" id=\"header-final-selection-and-ranking\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<button class=\"accordion-button collapsed\" type=\"button\" data-bs-toggle=\"collapse\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdata-bs-target=\"#final-selection-and-ranking\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\taria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"final-selection-and-ranking\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Final Selection and Ranking<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"final-selection-and-ranking\" class=\"accordion-collapse collapse\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\tdata-bs-parent=\"#accordion\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion-body\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Candidates will be ranked from highest to lowest score for each of the 6 research projects associated with the 6 available fellowships. Applications will be ordered according to the weighted average of the three criteria above, using the formula:<\/p>\n<p>Final classification = (0,30 \u00d7 A) + (0,30 \u00d7 B) + (0,40 \u00d7 C)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Offer of Fellowship:<\/strong> The highest-ranked candidate for each project, with a minimum score of 15, will receive a fellowship offer. Candidates must not have previously benefited from a doctoral scholarship or a \u201cPhD in a Company\u201d scholarship directly funded by FCT, irrespective of its duration.
