{"id":11728,"date":"2026-06-01T15:40:06","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T15:40:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gimm.pt\/?post_type=jobs&#038;p=11728"},"modified":"2026-06-02T16:28:02","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T16:28:02","slug":"research-fellowship-39","status":"publish","type":"jobs","link":"https:\/\/gimm.pt\/pt-pt\/jobs\/research-fellowship-39\/","title":{"rendered":"Research Fellowship"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><u>Fellowship Reference GIMM\/BI\/13-2026<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM) opens a call for one research fellowship under the project <strong><em>\u201cExperimentally evolving budding yeast cell size to test scaling laws in cell biology\u201d <\/em><\/strong>with the funding support from<strong><em> \u201cHFSP_RGEC28\/2023\u201d.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Scientific Area(s): <\/strong>Biology<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fellowship recipients \/ Admission requirements <em>(indicate mandatory and preferential requirements<\/em><\/strong><em>): <\/em>Any National, foreign and stateless candidate(s) that fulfill the necessary conditions to be enrolled in a non-academic degree course can apply.&nbsp; <em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are considered \u201cNon-academic degree courses\u201d the ones referred in <a href=\"https:\/\/dre.pt\/web\/guest\/legislacao-consolidada\/-\/lc\/122033591\/202004021256\/73697372\/diploma\/indice?q=Decreto-Lei+n.%C2%BA74%2F2006\">paragraph e) of number 3 of article 4 of Decree-Law nr 74\/2006, from 24<sup>th<\/sup> March<\/a>, in its current version, as long as they are developed in association and cooperation between a higher education institution and at least one R&amp;D Unit in accordance with the provisions of paragraph e) of Article 3 of FCT Fellowship Regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applicants must hold the following requirements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; MSc degree holder in Molecular Biology or related areas;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Extensive experience in advanced microscopy techniques;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Extensive experience in image analysis tools;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Experience with Python programming;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Experience in molecular biology techniques;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Experience in microbiology techniques (preferentially with S. cerevisiae).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Desirable requirements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Good communication skills in English, spoken and written;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The international experience of the candidates, although not a determining criterion for selection, will be valued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Work Plan and Objectives:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; The selected candidate will use advanced imaging techniques (e.g. Spinning Disk Confocal microscopy) to assess the nuclear and nucleolar volumes of experimentally evolved yeast cells with reduced cell size and, ultimately, understand what structural adaptations the cell must undergo to survive such extreme evolutionary reduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Legislation and Applicable Regulation: <\/strong><\/em>Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investiga\u00e7\u00e3o (Lei n.\u00ba 40\/2004, de 18 de Agosto, republished in attachment to Decreto-Lei n.\u00ba 202\/2012, de 27 de Agosto, changed by <strong>Decretos-Leis n.\u00ba 123\/2019, 28 de Agosto e n\u00ba <\/strong><strong><em>65\/2024, 1 de outubro<\/em><\/strong>) and current Regulation of Fellowships of GIMM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Predicted start date, duration and renewal conditions: <\/strong>The fellowship contract is predicted to start inJuly 2026, for a period of 6 (six) months on an exclusive basis, eventually renewable until the maximum stipulated in applicable regulations, not exceeding the eligibility period of the project. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Work place and Scientific orientation: <\/strong>The research activities will be developed at Genome Maintenance and Evolution Laboratory of GIMM, under the supervision of Marco Fumasoni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Non-discrimination and equal access policy<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>:<\/strong><\/em><em> <\/em>GIMM undertakes to ensure compliance with the principles of non-discrimination and equality and to that extent, provides that no candidate can be privileged, benefited, harmed or deprived of any right or exempted from any duty due in particular ancestry, age, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, family status, economic status, education, social origin or condition, genetic heritage, reduced working capacity, disability, chronic disease, nationality, ethnic origin or race, place of origin, language, religion, political or ideological convictions and trade union membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>International environment and experience: <\/strong>Diversity is a fundamental aspect of the essence of GIMM, where researchers and non-researchers of different nationalities, backgrounds and areas of study work together, promoting the exchange of experiences and interactions, contributing to the personal and professional development of each person and to the existence of an international, inclusive and stimulating environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Research Fellows Support Centre: <\/strong>The Research Fellows Support Centre works everyday from 09:00AM to 11:00AM at People &amp; Culture Unit Office.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fellowship financial conditions: <\/strong>The fellow will benefit from a monthly stipend in the amount of<strong>1.359,64<\/strong><strong>\u20ac.<\/strong> The amount will be paid by wire transfer at the end of each month. The fellow will also benefit from a personal accident insurance to execute the proposed research activities as well as the right to Social Security through Voluntary Social Insurance regimen, if wanted, under the terms of C\u00f3digo dos Regimes Contributivos do Sistema Previdencial de Seguran\u00e7a Social, and the contributions costs will be supported by the research project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Application documents: <\/strong>&#8211; Motivation Letter; &#8211; Detailed CV; &#8211; MSc Certificate<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Candidate\u2019s declaration of honor indicating previous fellowships, if any, its typology and duration.&nbsp; <strong><em>The non-compliance with these requirements determines the immediate rejection of the application.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In case the applicant does not have yet the required degree certificate, a declaration of honor stating the conclusion of the necessary qualifications for the purposes of this process will be accepted and must be sent by the end date of the call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jury evaluation and selection: <\/strong>Applications will be assessed by a jury composed of<strong> <\/strong>Marco Fumasoni, Partha Chakraborty, and Ana Quendera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Selection methods:<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>CV (70%) and motivation letter (30%). Only candidates with an overall score of at least 90% will be considered for the position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Deadlines and application process:<\/strong> <strong><u>The call will be open from <\/u><\/strong><strong><u>2<sup>st<\/sup> of June <\/u><\/strong><strong><u>until 17<sup>th<\/sup> of June <\/u><\/strong><strong><u>2026<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>.<\/u><\/strong><strong><u><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applications should be submitted to People &amp; Culture Unit, through the email <a href=\"mailto:positions@gimm.pt\">positions@gimm.pt<\/a>, with the reference \u201cGIMM\/BI\/13-2026\u201d in the subject. <strong><em>The non-compliance with these requirements determines the immediate rejection of the application.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Notification of results: <\/strong>Within 90 days after the termination of the applications submission deadline, both admitted and excluded candidates list and final classification list shall be communicated to all admitted candidates through email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Preliminary Hearing and Final Decision Deadline: <\/strong>After notification, all candidates have 10 working days to respond.
