O grupo de investiga\u00e7\u00e3o est\u00e1 a investigar como \u00e9 que parasitas como os que causam a mal\u00e1ria humana conseguem esconder-se do sistema imunit\u00e1rio, espalhar-se pelo corpo e emergir para infetar outros.<\/p>\n\n
Todos os anos, cerca de 500 milh\u00f5es de pessoas em todo o mundo s\u00e3o infectadas com o Plasmodiumfalciparum<\/em> – o parasita que causa a mal\u00e1ria – e cerca de 1\/2 milh\u00e3o de pessoas morrer\u00e3o da doen\u00e7a.<\/p>\n\n A infe\u00e7\u00e3o por um outro parasita, o Toxoplasma gondii<\/em>, \u00e9 menos perigosa mas est\u00e1 mais disseminada, infectando at\u00e9 um ter\u00e7o da popula\u00e7\u00e3o mundial. O parasita \u00e9 capaz de se esconder do sistema imunit\u00e1rio, mantendo-se num estado dormente durante muitos anos. Mas quando o sistema imunit\u00e1rio se altera – durante a gravidez ou quando a SIDA se desenvolve, por exemplo – pode voltar a surgir e causar problemas de sa\u00fade graves.<\/p>\n\n O Laborat\u00f3rio de Biologia Celular da Intera\u00e7\u00e3o Hospedeiro-Patog\u00e9nio<\/strong> quer descobrir como \u00e9 que estes parasitas conseguem infetar as c\u00e9lulas humanas, como escapam ao sistema imunit\u00e1rio, como se movem atrav\u00e9s do corpo e como emergem para infetar outras pessoas. O grupo est\u00e1 a utilizar uma s\u00e9rie de t\u00e9cnicas laboratoriais para identificar e estudar os genes e as mol\u00e9culas nos parasitas e nas c\u00e9lulas humanas, de modo a poder construir uma imagem detalhada da forma como interagem entre si durante a infe\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n\n Ao saber mais sobre os pormenores intrincados da infe\u00e7\u00e3o por parasitas, o laborat\u00f3rio espera encontrar novas abordagens para combater estas doen\u00e7as devastadoras e
