O nosso objetivo \u00e9 compreender a patog\u00e9nese da imunodefici\u00eancia e encontrar novas estrat\u00e9gias para a reconstitui\u00e7\u00e3o imunit\u00e1ria. Revel\u00e1mos mecanismos envolvidos na homeostase das c\u00e9lulas T humanas e na regula\u00e7\u00e3o imunit\u00e1ria atrav\u00e9s do estudo de contextos cl\u00ednicos \u00fanicos, como a infe\u00e7\u00e3o pelo VIH-2. O VIH-2 estabelece um melhor equil\u00edbrio com o hospedeiro do que o VIH-1, conduzindo a uma taxa muito mais lenta de progress\u00e3o da doen\u00e7a e a n\u00edveis mais baixos de v\u00edrus em circula\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n\n
O estudo comparativo destas duas infec\u00e7\u00f5es permitiu-nos clarificar quest\u00f5es centrais na imunopatog\u00e9nese da SIDA, aproveitando o facto de Portugal ser o \u00fanico pa\u00eds n\u00e3o africano com uma preval\u00eancia significativa do VIH-2. Al\u00e9m disso, a nossa unidade integra um centro de refer\u00eancia que efectua diagn\u00f3stico, acompanhamento especializado e investiga\u00e7\u00e3o em imunodefici\u00eancias prim\u00e1rias, doen\u00e7as raras consideradas experi\u00eancias naturais com as quais podemos aprender muito sobre o sistema imunit\u00e1rio humano. O objetivo final \u00e9 que a nossa investiga\u00e7\u00e3o sobre o desenvolvimento das c\u00e9lulas T no timo humano e a preserva\u00e7\u00e3o do tecido linfoide, particularmente no contexto da ativa\u00e7\u00e3o imunit\u00e1ria persistente, se traduza em terapias inovadoras baseadas no sistema
