Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM) has an open position for a Specialist to join Flow Cytometry platform. This is a long-term position and involves assisting researchers with their Flow Cytometry experiments and performing cell sorting services. Prior Flow Cytometry experience with experiment design, acquisition, and data analysis is required. Experience operating a cell sorter is highly desired but not required.
As Flow Cytometry Specialist you will be part of a great team and will have an opportunity to gain hands-on experience on our state-of-the-art analyzers and cell sorters, collaborate with researchers in different areas, and participate in projects involving high-parameter spectral cytometry, imaging flow cytometry and advanced data analysis approaches.
The main responsibilities include:
- Run Cell Sorters/Analyzers to meet the needs of users;
- Purification of cell populations by flow cytometry (cell sorting);
- Maintenance, quality control, and quality assurance of all flow cytometry instruments and experiments in the Facility;
- Provide comprehensive training in Flow Cytometry basic concepts and use of flow cytometry analyzers and cell sorters to researchers;
- Provide support and technical advice on flow cytometry, experimental design, panel design, protocol optimization, and execution to researchers;
- Provide training in imaging flow cytometry to researchers;
- Provide support in flow cytometry software and data analysis;
- Development of new cytometry protocols, according to the needs of each research project;
- Management of reports and data backups;
- General lab organization and administrative tasks;
- Participate in activities directed to internal and external people, such as courses, visits to the Facility or Flow Cytometry-related demonstrations.
Profile of Candidate:
We are looking for a highly motivated person, passionate about science, interested in technology, eager to learn and solve problems, with personal competencies to work in a service-based environment, with good interpersonal skills and a high degree of initiative.
Mandatory Requirements:
- MSc degree in Immunology, Biology, Chemistry or related field;
- Previous experience in polychromatic Flow Cytometry using 6 or more fluorescent parameters (user’s level);
- Previous experience in spectral flow cytometry (user’s level);
- Basic knowledge of cell sorting principles (user’s level);
- Proven experience in cell culture, isolation of primary cells, protocols, and sample preparation techniques most commonly used in cytometry;
- Experience in using specific flow cytometry software (e.g. FACSDiva, SpectroFlo and FlowJo);
- Interested in supporting scientific research and multiple projects;
- Comfortable working independently while also contributing actively within a collaborative team environment;
- Proactive, solution-oriented, and eager to troubleshoot and improve workflows;
- Good communicator with strong written and spoken English skills;

- Willing to learn, flexible, adaptable, and resilient.
- Strong customer orientation;
- Good communication skills and interaction in an environment with multiple users.
Desirable Requirements:
- Previous experience working as a technician in a cytometry core-facility, being in charge of handling and maintaining cytometers and performing quality controls (in both analyzers and sorters) will be highly valued.
- Expertise in spectral flow cytometry, including experience in panel design, sample acquisition, troubleshooting, and analysis, will be highly considered;
- Previous experience in cell separation by flow cytometry (Cell Sorting);
- Previous experience in Imaging Flow Cytometry;
- Previous experience in training and support in: instrument operation, protocol optimization, sample acquisition, panel design, and data analysis;
- Previous experience in troubleshooting technical and experimental issues using flow cytometry instruments;
