The GIMM – Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine is a pioneering Portuguese private research foundation with an ambitious vision for fundamental scientific exploration and its profound impact on global health and well-being. Founded in 2023, GIMM is the result of the merge of two leading research institutes: Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (iMM) and Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) and dedicates to unraveling the fundamental mysteries of life and aims to be at the forefront of transdisciplinary research. 

What GIMM seeks: At this moment, GIMM is looking for Laboratory Manager to join the Innate Immune Cell Biology Laboratory led by Daniel Fisch, funded by Core Funding.

Key responsibilities

  • Coordinate and supervise the lab’s day-to-day operations, including research projects and experiments;
  • Prepare and maintain stocks, reagents, and solutions, ensuring timely availability;
  • Provide support for experiments as needed, assisting all lab members;
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards;
  • Organize and maintain laboratory databases, including inventories, protocols, and records;
  • Manage laboratory budgets, resource allocation, procurement of supplies, and maintenance of equipment;
  • Train lab members, including in safety, experimental techniques, and operational procedures;
  • Collaborate with researchers across GIMM to facilitate interdisciplinary projects;
  • Carry out experiments independently to support the lab’s efforts in studying the cell biology of innate immunity.

Profile of Candidate

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in STEM areas;
  • Leadership and organizational skills to effectively manage operations and personnel;
  • Proficiency in laboratory management software, data analysis tools, and database organization;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English (the lab’s working language);
  • Knowledge of funding applications, and budget management;
  • Expertise in laboratory safety protocols, experimental techniques, and compliance standards;

Desirable Requirements:

  • Previous experience with mammalian cell culture, biochemistry, molecular biology and/or imaging will be highly valued;
  • Proven experience in project management;
  • Experience with mouse work is considered a plus;
  • Proficiency in Portuguese is considered a plus;
  • Forward thinking, can-do, proactive attitude and career oriented;
  • International scientific experience.

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Initial selection will be based on the cover letter (30%) and CV evaluation (40%), fit for the lab (30%), and a virtual discussion (if required);
  • The top 3 candidates from the initial selection will pass to the second selection, which will be based upon an in-depth interview and evaluation of support letters.
