The Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM) has an open position for a Specialist to join Flow Cytometry Platform. This is a long-term position and involves assisting researchers with their Flow Cytometry experiments, performing cell sorting services, and implementing a service dedicated to companies. Prior experience working in an industry or diagnostic laboratory, with a focus on results and customer service, is required. Previous experience in Flow Cytometry is highly desired but not required.

As Flow Cytometry Specialist, you will be part of a great team and will have an opportunity to gain hands-on experience on our state-of-the-art analyzers and cell sorters, collaborate with researchers and customers in different areas, and to participate in projects involving high-parameter spectral cytometry, imaging flow cytometry and advanced data analysis approaches.

The main responsibilities include:

a. Set up a service dedicated to companies, including: definition of workflows, optimization of sample process and acquisition protocols, and creation of a system for results emission and reporting;

b. Lead all experiments with Industry, ensuring quality standards and protocol compliance;

c. Run Cell Sorters/Analyzers to meet the needs of users;

d. Purification of cell populations by flow cytometry (cell sorting);

e. Maintenance, quality control, and quality assurance of all flow cytometry instruments and experiments in the Facility;

f. Provide comprehensive training in Flow Cytometry basic concepts and use of flow cytometry analyzers and cell sorters to researchers;

g. Provide support and technical advice on flow cytometry, experimental design, panel design, protocol optimization, and execution to researchers;

h. Provide training in imaging flow cytometry to researchers;

i. Provide support in flow cytometry software and data analysis;

j. Development of new cytometry protocols, according to the needs of each research project;

k. Management of reports and data backups;

l. General lab organization and administrative tasks;

m. Participate in activities directed to internal and external people, such as courses, visits to the Facility or Flow Cytometry-related demonstrations.

Profile of Candidate:

We are looking for a highly motivated person, passionate about science, interested in technology, eager to learn and to solve problems, with personal competencies to work in a service-based environment, with good inter-personal skills and a high degree of initiative.

Mandatory Requirements:

  1. MSc degree in Immunology, Biology, Chemistry or related field;
  2. Previous experience working in an industry or diagnostic laboratory, with the emission of results, ensuring  quality standards and protocol compliance;
  3. Previous experience in polychromatic Flow Cytometry (user’s level);
  4. Previous experience with flow cytometry data analysis (e.g. FlowJo or similar software);
  5. Extensive experience in a research lab, including handling samples from different origins;
  6. Interested in supporting scientific research and multiple projects;
  7. Comfortable working independently while also contributing actively within a collaborative team environment;
  8. Proactive, solution-oriented, and eager to troubleshoot and improve workflows;
  9. Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple experiments and priorities simultaneously;
  10. Able to independently lead and coordinate cytometry-focused projects from planning to completion;
  11. Good communicator with strong written and spoken English skills;
  12. Comfortable working in a dynamic, international research setting;
  13. Willing to learn, flexible, adaptable, and resilient;
  14. Strong customer orientation;
  15. Good communication skills and interaction in an environment with multiple users.

Desirable Requirements:

  1. Expertise in polychromatic and spectral flow cytometry, including experience in panel design, sample acquisition, troubleshooting and analysis, will be highly considered.
  2. Previous  experience in cell separation by flow  cytometry (Cell Sorting);
  3. Previous experience in Imaging Flow Cytometry;
  4. Previous experience in training and support in: instrument operation, protocol optimization, sample acquisition, panel design and data analysis;
  5. Previous experience in troubleshooting technical and experimental issues using flow cytometry instruments;
  6. Knowledge flow cytometry data analysis software (FACSDiva, SpectroFlo, INSPIRE, FlowJo, FCS Express, IDEAS, Cytolution and OMIQ) will be valued.
