The Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM) is seeking a Technician to join Electron
Microscopy platform, dedicated to processing and imaging biological samples for electron microscopy.
It offers services for research, diagnostics and industry, develops customized methods, provides technical
training, and grants access to specialized equipment. The EMF collabo rates openly with other facilities
to support multidisciplinary projects, including CLEM approaches, and works with external partners to
promote broad access to both basic and advanced electron microscopy techniques.
The main responsabilities include:
Technical E xecution:
1) Execution of standardized techniques such as sample preservation, sample cutting and staining
for transmission electron microscopy;
2) Execution of advanced techniques, such as electron tomography, immunolabeling and
Correlative Light Electron Microscopy (CLEM);
3) Data collection on transmission electron microscope;
Specialized Assistance to Users:
4) Providing assistance to researchers regarding experimental design for proper data collection and
data analysis;
Quality Control and Lab Management Tasks:
5) Quality control and quality assurance of technique execution using SOPs procedures and keep
them up-to-date;
6) Quality assurance of the equipment of the electron microscopy facility;
7) Problem reporting and tracking of techniques and equipment;
8) General lab management and administrative tasks such as stock reagent preparation, project
tracking and report generation for the users;
Technical Development and Optimization:
9) Development of electron microscopy techniques, workflows and solutions to answer users’
needs;
Training:
10) Training of the Facility Users;
11) Training of new members of the facility team in basic and advanced concepts, sample handling
and instrument operation;
12) Organizing technical courses for the spread of facility knowledge;
Training for Development of Skills:
13) Participation in outreach activities such as conference communications, participation and
teaching in national and international courses, Facility tours or other electron microscopy –
related demonstrations;
Image Analysis:
14) Coordination with users for image analysis of Electron Microscopy data;
15) Method and workflow development when needed;
16) Training of users on the analysis.
Availability to work on weekends and outside regular working hours every time is it needed. Work done
by objectives.
