One of our core pillars is Nurturing the Next Generation, and with that in mind, we have developed a series of initiatives with schools to introduce children and young people to science: what it is, how the scientific process works, what a laboratory looks like, what the daily life of a scientist is like, and more.
Our goal is to inspire younger generations and show them that science is not only the foundation of all existing knowledge, but also a possible path they can choose to follow.
In this context, we have three programs implemented in partnership with schools from the municipalities of Lisbon and Oeiras.
Ciência di Noz Manera (CNM), Science Our Way, in Cape Verdean Creole is a mentoring program dedicated to fostering scientific curiosity and empowerment in underserved communities across the Greater Lisbon area. In this program we work with schools located in priority educational intervention areas as identified by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Innovation.
This program is implemented in partnership with Champalimaud Foundation.
CNM’s structure
Phase I – one session at schools to introduce CNM with all 8th graders
Phase II – one hands-one session at CF with all 8th graders
Phase III – six mentoring sessions at schools with smaller groups of students
Students’ testimonials
Rather than describing the program, we invite you to hear directly from the students who participated in the 3rd edition of CNM. In their testimonials (English subtitles), you’ll hear about the impact of the mentoring they received.
Mentorias Oeiras is a science education program that takes place in selected schools from the Oeiras municipality and gives students from the 12th grade the opportunity to develop a project mentored by a researcher from the surrounding institutes, including GIMM. The program is divided in 3 moments: introduction mentors-mentees, one or more mentoring sessions, final presentation and evaluation. All researchers can participate, regardless of their main site location.
This program is implemented in partnership with Oeiras City Council.
We are partners in the SEDD project (Sensibilização para o Empreendedorismo e Inovação), an initiative by Lisbon City Council that aims to spark and foster an entrepreneurial mindset among students from 9th to 12th grade. The project prepares them for the future by developing essential skills such as creativity, autonomy, and teamwork.
By bringing schools closer to the professional world, with a special focus on the technological and creative sectors, SEDD transforms ideas into value for the community, promoting a more hands-on education aligned with the demands of the job market.
As part of this initiative, we offer Job Shadowing experiences with our scientists, giving students the opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the daily life of a researcher.
