Message from the Executive Committee

Welcome to the GIMM website! The Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM) was born at the end of 2023 from the merger of our two founding Institutes – Instituto de Medicina Molecular (iMM) and Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) – which have always been considered beacons of scientific excellence. Both were recognized for fostering a culture of rigor, collaboration, and groundbreaking research. Together, as GIMM, we are poised to amplify these values and create an even more vibrant environment where scientists, clinicians, and students from around the globe can thrive.

GIMM’s Strategic Plan is structured around key action pillars, with a primary focus on discovery life sciences, which will instigate translation and mission-driven boost of human health:

1. Challenging Frontier Science. Pushing the boundaries of scientific knowledge through curiosity-driven research and multidisciplinary collaboration.
2. Boosting Health Outcomes. Improving global health outcomes and promoting equity through innovative solutions.
3. Fostering Innovation and Translation. Transforming scientific advancements into practical applications for disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
4. Nurturing the Next Generation. Developing versatile and innovative thinkers and problem-solvers by supporting ambitious transdisciplinary research programs.
5. Engaging, Inspiring, and Spreading Excellence. Promoting programs beyond our walls that benefit science and society at large.

GIMM has set out some very ambitious goals including to tackle some of the most pressing health challenges through creative and innovative research. Despite the high stakes of the challenges, we are confident GIMM will deliver. By joining forces and creating a much more dynamic and dazzling community we aim to intensify our capacity to attract top talent and offer state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities to establish GIMM as a globally recognized life sciences hub. With a vibrant and highly qualified faculty, we will foster and guide future leaders, enhancing their careers, training, and most of all scientific achievements.

As we embark on this new chapter, we are proud of the strides we have already made and eager to celebrate all the discoveries that are yet to come. We are more determined than ever to continue making significant contributions to science and medicine, and this new institution stands as a testament to that commitment.
