GIMM Festival

The GIMM Festival is an annual event in Lisbon, Portugal that embodies the spirit of exploration and innovation at the heart of the Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM). Bridging science and society, the festival creates a dynamic platform for dialogue, discovery, and engagement. Each year, it focuses on a transformative theme that reflects pressing global challenges, aligning with GIMM’s purpose of advancing science to improve lives. This year’s theme, “Aging and Longevity”, invites participants to explore the future of aging through science. By shifting its focus annually, The GIMM Festival ensures a continued connection to the evolving frontiers of knowledge, fostering public awareness and inspiring action. From immersive experiences to thought-provoking discussions, it is a celebration of curiosity and a catalyst for change.

What questions do we need to ask to build a unifying theory of aging?

In this session, speakers represent a different theory of aging and discuss the possibility of integrating them into a unifying theory of aging. Then, speakers question whether anti-aging interventions can truly achieve rejuvenation (a reversal of the aging program) or if their health benefit derives from delaying/stopping the aging process. Followed by a round table with all session speakers.

Transforming Aging: What questions do we need to ask about the current and next targets for longevity therapies?

In this session, speakers support and confront the potential of current vs next longevity targets as anti-aging interventions. Followed by a round table.

What questions should biomedical science consider regarding the social aspects of aging?

In this round table session, we bring together social scientists, economists and other key opinion leaders to discuss the social aspects we should consider around aging. We include international and Portuguese participants to bring this national context to the international stage.

Venue

We are happy to confirm that our event will be held at the Pavilhão de Portugal (Pavilion of Portugal) in north east Lisbon.

Situated in the modern borough of Parque das Nações, this area also hosts the Ciência Viva Pavilion of Knowledge, providing science education for families, plus the vast Lisbon Oceanarium, as well as many waterfront restaurants and green spaces.

It is also very easy to reach the old town of Lisbon by metro.

Any accommodation close to the Pavilhão de Portugal or in the centre of Lisbon with a good connection to the red metro line will be adequate for event attendance.

Mission & History

Mission & History

Our host institute – the Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM) – was created in 2023 from the merger of two leading Portuguese research institutes: Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (iMM) and Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC), and proudly announces its inaugural flagship event – The GIMM Fest.

With our institutional motto On the verge of discovery, and with an umbrella concept of looking towards the questions of the future, we will bring together global experts to highlight key questions that no one has answered yet. Each year will have a specific scientific theme, and, for 2025, the theme will be Aging and Longevity

For this event, we aim to gather the most influential minds in fundamental and applied biomedical sciences, as well as thought leaders from diverse complementary fields such as social sciences and economics. Over the course of three days, we will explore the critical questions driving the future of aging and longevity research. Our goal is to create a multidisciplinary platform that not only advances scientific discourse but also prioritizes bridging the gap between research and society, fostering meaningful participation. To this end, one day of the event is targeted for the general public and, amongst a tailored program of activities, includes the translation of the main messages from the first two days, communicated by GIMM researchers.

Event Objectives

  • To identify and prioritize the pivotal questions necessary to advance a unifying theory of aging.
  • To critically evaluate the relevance and timing of interventions in aging and longevity therapies.
  • To confront and expand upon the current and future targets for longevity therapies.
  • To explore the social, economic, and ethical dimensions of aging, fostering a global dialogue that incorporates diverse perspectives.
  • To coproduce concrete science and society outputs.
  • To mobilize society by making cutting-edge science accessible and engaging, ensuring public involvement in shaping the future of healthcare and longevity.
