GIMM CARE Flagship Research Projects Awarded to Susana Lopes da Silva and Susana Fernandes

Following an open call earlier this year, two new Flagship research projects have been awarded to two clinician-scientists affiliated with the Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM), Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa (FMUL) and Unidade Local de Saúde Santa Maria (ULSSM), through the GIMM CARE clinical and translational research initiative.

Susana Lopes da Silva, Consultant in Immunoalergology and Invited Assistant Professor, will build a multidisciplinary platform in collaboration with Hospital Vall d’Hebron, Barcelona, aiming to shorten diagnosis time, support personalized therapies, and create a national repository of genomes and clinical samples at the GIMM Biobank. This project is designed to respond to GIMM CARE Mission 1: Address critical healthcare gaps for pediatric and rare diseases.

Susana Fernandes, Critical care physician and Associate Professor, will lead a project to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and recovery of sepsis patients, targeting a 10% reduction in one-year mortality and hospital readmissions. This project is designed to respond to GIMM CARE Mission 3: Develop transformative solutions that prevent and combat infectious diseases and immune-related conditions.

Each is awarded up to 200,000 EUR to deliver the project outcomes over the next three years.

GIMM CARE is structured around broad long-term strategic missions aiming to boost clinical and translational research in Portugal. The next Call for Flagship Project funding will be launched on 29th September 2025.
