From Academia to Industry: BIOMICS Hosts Career Transition Workshop for Researchers

Events

BIOMICS recently welcomed researchers for a two-day practical workshop focused on career transitions beyond academia. Held on 23–24 March 2026 at GIMM Lisbon site, the “From Academia to Industry: Career Transition Workshop” brought together scientists looking to explore new professional paths in the private sector.

The in-person event was organized as part of the BIOMICS project and offered participants a hands-on learning experience structured around three core themes: identifying career opportunities and translating academic experience into industry language; building a strong CV and online presence, including LinkedIn optimization; and developing skills for networking, interviews, and salary negotiation.

Through interactive sessions and practical exercises, attendees were guided on how to position their scientific backgrounds for roles outside research institutions – a challenge many early-career researchers face when considering a move to industry.

The workshop was led by two experienced trainers from the Training and Academic Office at the CRG (Centre for Genomic Regulation) in Barcelona: Damjana Kastelic, and Elena Moreno Castillo. Their expertise in researcher career development provided participants with concrete tools and strategies to navigate recruitment processes in the private sector with greater confidence.

By the end of the two days, participants had the opportunity to tailor their CVs for specific job opportunities, refine their professional profiles, and practice interview scenarios in a supportive environment.

This workshop reflects BIOMICS ongoing commitment to supporting researchers at all stages of their careers – not only in advancing science, but also in preparing them for the diverse opportunities that lie beyond the laboratory.
