The GIMM – Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine Biobank has a new Co-Director: Patrícia Costa Reis, who will now assume functions alongside Sérgio Dias, reinforcing the shared management of this strategic infrastructure for biomedical research and health in Portugal.
With solid clinical and academic experience, the pediatric physician, researcher, and professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa – FMUL), brings a strategic vision for the future of the Biobank, focusing on promoting clinical research and interaction between the scientific community and healthcare professionals.
“Biobanks are essential for scientific research, facilitating studies, with benefits ranging from personalized medicine to public health. The collection and preservation of samples and clinical data, with ethical and scientific rigor, allows the development of quality research and enables innovative studies,” explains Patrícia Costa Reis.
Embedded in the Lisbon Academic Medical Center (CAML), the Biobank results from a solid collaboration between GIMM, FMUL, and the Santa Maria Local Health Unit. This ecosystem brings research closer to clinical practice and teaching, in an environment that promotes innovation.
“Besides being a pioneer at the national level, CAML also positions itself as an important scientific research center at the international level, an area where the Biobank and its database play a fundamental role,” emphasizes the President of ULSSM, Carlos das Neves Martins.
With this new leadership, the GIMM Biobank reinforces its commitment to scientific excellence, ethics, and innovation in the service of health.
