Biobanks: Boosting health research – GIMM Biobanks: Boosting health research – GIMM

GIMM - Biobanks: Boosting health research

Where: Lisbon site
When: October 9 to 11, 2024
Registration deadline: September 22, 2024

Description:

Biobanks are fundamental infrastructures for supporting health research.

Biobanks have been established in Portugal since 2011. However, it has been a slow process with several obstacles. These obstacles are compounded by the difficulty of having a support network to support the development of these essential infrastructures for biomedical research.

The advanced training course is aimed at doctoral students, health professionals and others who wish to deepen their technical knowledge in the area of biobanks, allowing an in-depth introduction to biobanks, through a global knowledge of these infrastructures, passing through their operation in Portugal (the GIMM-CAML Biobank being an example of good practice in various areas), to more specific aspects on ethical issues, sample quality or data security.

Objectives:

  • To acquire quality information in the theoretical and technical fields on the implementation of biobanks in the contexts in which participants carry out their professional activity.
  • To learn about the different activities carried out in biobanks, from the collection and processing of biological samples, to research, to the use of biobanks.
  • Recognize, implement and solve the main ethical and social issues that arise in the implementation of biobanks in Portugal and in the global context
  • Encourage the sharing of experiences and information
  • Presentation of case studies
