Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network ENDAMR: Exploring Novel Drivers of Anti-Microbial Resistance” – PhD Positions

About the ENDAMR Network

Antibiotic resistance (AMR) is a major public health issue, with 5 million deaths in 2019 linked to AMR worldwide. These numbers are comparable to the toll of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Without new solutions, AMR is projected to soon become one of the leading causes of death in the EU. Addressing this challenge requires the development of new, effective antibiotics, but this alone is not sufficient due to the rapid evolution of bacteria. Understanding the drivers and mechanisms of AMR is vital to delay or reverse resistance in both existing and new antibiotics, especially since no new broad-spectrum antibiotics have been developed since the 1990s and their development is a lengthy process with high attrition rates.

The ENDAMR doctoral network aims to better equip researchers in Europe to understand and develop new strategies to tackle AMR and prepare Doctoral Candidates for various career paths beyond academia, including teaching, science communication, and entrepreneurship. Doctoral Candidates will gain transferable skills and learn from industry role models, equipping them to make significant contributions to solving the AMR crisis.

The ENDAMR network brings together 8 beneficiaries and 7 associated partners, located in 9 different countries (Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland) and one intergovernmental organisation (EMBL, the coordinator). The 10 Doctoral Candidates will enjoy a multi-disciplinary and international environment with plenty of training opportunities and exchange with all labs involved in the Network.

PhD Project at the Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM), Portugal

One of the 10 PhD positions within the ENDAMR network is hosted by the Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM) in Portugal. The specific project available at GIMM is:

DC2: Fitness effect of resistance mutations within microbiomes

  • Host Institution: Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM), PT
  • Supervisors: Dr. Karina Xavier & Dr. Isabel Gordo
  • Project Duration: 36 months
  • Project Description:
  • This project studies how antibiotic resistance affects E. coli fitness in the gut. The Doctoral Candidate will examine competition between resistant and non-resistant bacteria across different microbial environments, analyse how bacteria adapt to resistance costs over time, and investigate the role of bacterial communication (quorum sensing signalling) in these processes. The project aims to improve understanding of resistance dynamics and inform microbiome management strategies.

Who are we looking for?

As an international institute where English serves as the working language on campus, GIMM welcomes researchers from around the globe. The perfect candidate must be highly motivated, passionate about science and wish to fully commit to pursuing knowledge in a multidisciplinary environment.

Eligibility Criteria for Doctoral Candidates

To be eligible for a PhD position within the ENDAMR network, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a Master’s degree in a relevant academic field or possess a degree that qualifies them to pursue a PhD.
  • Demonstrate excellent English proficiency.
  • Not already possess a doctoral degree at the date of recruitment.
  • Comply with the mobility rule: Candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their chosen host institution (for the GIMM position, this is Portugal) for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately preceding their recruitment (i.e. the starting date indicated in the employment contract/equivalent direct contract).

Please note that accepted candidates will be asked to register at the CAML PhD programme, from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon.

Benefits of the PhD position

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network Program provides excellent working conditions and attractive salaries for the Doctoral Candidates. Each 3-year full-time fellowship includes:

  • Living allowance: A monthly installment of 3,400 euro*, before taxation and compulsory deductions (the exact amount for Portugal is subject to the EU correction coefficient).
  • Monthly mobility allowance: 600 euro.
  • Monthly family allowance (if applicable): 660 euro.

*pondered by the EU correction coefficient (page 112) of the Work Programme 2023-2025 adopted on 6 December 2022 (European Commission Decision C(2022)7550)).

Selection Procedure at GIMM

The selection process for the PhD position at the Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM) will occur in three stages:

The first stage is eliminatory, and each application will be reviewed in detail by 3 members of the selection committee. The evaluation considers the candidate’s merit and motivation, assessed based on the documents submitted in the application. Subsequently, the committee will meet to deliberate. Applications considered admissible will be scored on a scale of 1 to 20 in each of the following evaluation criteria:

  • Criterion A – CV that reflects academic, scientific and professional, with a weight of 50%:
  • Criterion B – Letter of motivation, with a weight of 35%. The evaluation of the motivation letter considers the motivation to apply for the specific Programme; how the Programme can contribute to the individual career development and the alignment of individual professional objectives with the objectives of GIMM.
  • Criterion C – Letters of recommendation, with a weight of 15%. The evaluation of letters of recommendation focuses on the candidate’s intellectual curiosity and scientific commitment, academic curriculum and experience and competence in research.

Successful candidates from the first stage (achieving a grade of 14 or above) will be invited to the second eliminatory stage, which comprises an interview with a minimum of three members of the selection committee. Subsequently, the committee will meet to deliberate on interview performance and assess each candidate according to the following criteria:

  • Criterion A – Scientific knowledge – general knowledge in the scientific topics existing at GIMM, weighing 25%;
  • Criterion B – Ability to discuss and critically analyze the scientific work produced to date, namely the ability to identify and analyze weak and strong aspects; ambition and future plans, weighing 30%;
  • Criterion C – Motivation, initiative and originality, weighing 25%;
  • Criterion D – General knowledge and interests: science and society interactions; cultural and other societal concerns and interests, weighing 10%;
  • Criterion E – Proficiency in English – fluency, articulation, etc., with a weight of 10%.

Successful candidates from the second stage (scoring 14 or above) will move to the third stage. This stage entails an individual interview conducted by three members of the selection committee. The committee evaluates candidates based on the following criteria:

  • Criterion A (30%): Academic, scientific, and professional merit, and its alignment with the applicant’s chosen topic.
  • Criterion B (30%): Motivation to apply for the specific topic.
  • Criterion C (40%): Specific knowledge in the candidate’s area of study.

One ranking per research topic will be made. Applications will be ordered according to the weighted average obtained in each of the 3 criteria above, translated into the formula: Documental classification = (0.30 × A) + (0.30 × B) + (0.40 × C).

Selection Committee at GIMM

The selection committee for this PhD position at the Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM) will comprise PhD holders from GIMM, including Dr. Karina Xavier and Dr. Isabel Gordo, and a member of one ENDAMR partner institution
