Position 

GIMM – Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine is opening a call for the recruitment of two Biobank Technicians to carry out the activities described below, under the supervision of Ângela Afonso:

Main responsibilities 

  1. Integrated management of biological samples – Participate in the collection, receipt, processing and storage of biological samples (e.g., faeces, blood, urine and other biological fluids), ensuring their correct handling in accordance with established protocols and contributing to the quality and traceability of the biobank.
  • Quality assurance and laboratory operational support – Collaborate in monitoring sample integrity and equipment operation, including quality control, management of consumables and support for the maintenance of laboratory routines.
  • Management and integrity of laboratory data – Record and update information in sample management systems (LIMS), ensuring accuracy, consistency and compliance with applicable data protection standards and good practices.
  • Contribution to research projects – Support scientific teams in sample preparation and in carrying out laboratory procedures, with the opportunity to engage with different areas of biomedical research and to develop new technical skills.
  • Support for clinical data management – Collaborate in the organisation and validation of clinical data associated with samples, ensuring consistency, quality and alignment with ethical and regulatory requirements, in coordination with research teams.

Candidate profile 

The ideal candidate should have: 

  1. Academic background in Life Sciences or related fields – Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences, Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, or related areas. A Master’s degree will be valued but is not an exclusion criterion, with emphasis placed on the value of laboratory experience involving the handling of biological samples.
  • Experience in laboratory techniques and handling biological samples – Practical knowledge of sample processing, storage and preservation protocols, preferably in a biobank or biomedical laboratory environment.
  • Knowledge of biosafety standards and good laboratory practices – Familiarity with safety regulations for handling biological samples and managing laboratory waste.
  • IT and laboratory database skills – Experience using laboratory management software (LIMS) and basic tools for recording and analysing data.
  • Organisational skills, attention to detail and teamwork – A proactive and meticulous profile, able to collaborate in a multidisciplinary environment while ensuring the quality and traceability of processes.

Working conditions

The selected candidate will join a highly collaborative scientific environment and will work in direct coordination with researchers, students and technical teams.

O GIMM oferece ótimas condições de trabalho, incluindo um contrato a tempo Inteiro a termo incerto com início previsto em setembro de 2026 e com duração correspondente ao período necessário à execução do plano de trabalhos. Será pago ao candidato(a) selecionado(a) um salário base bruto mensal de 1300,00€, de acordo com o previsto no financiamento e nos Regulamentos internos, assim como subsídios de férias e de natal, sujeitos aos impostos e taxas legais atualmente em vigor de acordo com a Lei Geral do Trabalho. Será ainda devido subsídio de alimentação no valor de 10.20€ por cada dia efetivo de trabalho.

GIMM offers excellent working conditions, including a full-time fixed-term contract of uncertain duration, expected to start in September 2026 and with a duration corresponding to the period required to execute the work plan. The selected candidate will be paid a gross monthly base salary of €1,300.00, in accordance with the funding provisions and internal regulations, as well as holiday and Christmas allowances, subject to the applicable taxes and legal contributions currently in force under the General Labour Law. A meal allowance of €10.20 will also be due for each effective working day.

Evaluation and selection:

1st Stage: Curricular Assessment (30%) and Motivation Letter (20%);

2nd Stage: Interview (50%). Only candidates who obtain a score equal to and/or higher than 45% in the 1st stage will be selected for interview. In the event of a tie, the tie-breaking decision will be made by the chair of the jury (Dr Sérgio Dias).
