The Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM) opens a call for 1 (one) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship under the project “Evolutionary Rewiring Genome Maintenance” with the funding support from EMBO – European Molecular Biology Organization.

Applicants must hold the following requirements: We are looking for a motivated and independent person to join our group at the GIMM as a postdoctoral.  We are seeking curious people driven by enthusiasm for science. The ideal candidate should have a Ph.D. degree in life sciences have the ability to work as an effective member of a team as well as independently under general supervision and have well-developed communication and writing skills. Excellent written and verbal communication ability, in English, is therefore required. 

a) PhD in life sciences (obtained less than 3 years ago);

b) Ability to work effectively in a team and independently under general supervision;

c) Excellent communication and writing skills;

d) Excellent written and verbal communication in English. 

Preferred Criteria:

  1. Experience with Evolutionary Biology;
  2. Familiarity with Genomics;
  3. Computational skills;
  4. Experience in Genetics, Molecular and Cellular Biology;
  5. Familiarity with the model organism (S. cerevisiae), or other microrganisms;
  6. Social skills;
  7. The international experience of the candidates, although not a determining criterion for selection, will be valued.

Work Plan and Objectives: The postdoctoral researcher will lead an independent project under the supervision and guidance of the Principal Investigator. The project will aim to understand basic principles governing genome maintenance over evolutionary timescales. It will involve molecular, cellular, and evolutionary techniques with S. cerevisiae, as well as computational and genomic analyses. The postdoctoral will also give and receive help from other members of the lab, and will be expected to actively participate in the lab and institutional intellectual activities.

Legislation and Applicable Regulation: Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação (Lei n.º 40/2004, de 18 de Agosto, republished in attachment to Decreto-Lei n.º 202/2012, de 27 de Agosto, changed by Decretos-Leis n.º 123/2019, 28 de Agosto e nº 65/2024, 1 de outubro), current Regulation of Fellowships of GIMM. 

Predicted start date, duration and renewal conditions: The fellowship contract is predicted to start in November 2024for a period of 12 (twelve) months on an exclusive basis, eventually renewable until the maximum stipulated in applicable regulations, not exceeding the eligibility period of the project (expected to end on 31/12/2027).  

Work place and Scientific orientation: The research activities will be developed at the Genome Maintenance and Evolution Lab of GIMM, under the supervision of  Dr. Marco Fumasoni.

Research Fellows Support Centre: The Research Fellows Support Centre operates on working days from 09:00 AM to 11:00 AM at GIMM’s People & Culture Office. 

Fellowship financial conditions: The fellow will benefit from a monthly stipend in the amount of 2.260,00. The amount will be paid by wire transfer at the end of each month. The fellow will also benefit from a personal accident insurance to execute the proposed research activities as well as the right to Social Security through Voluntary Social Insurance regimen, if wanted, under the terms of Código dos Regimes Contributivos do Sistema Previdencial de Segurança Social, and the contributions costs will be supported by the research project.

In case the applicant does not have yet the required degree certificate, a declaration of honor stating the conclusion of the necessary qualifications for the purposes of this process will be accepted and must be sent by the end date of the call. 

Jury evaluation and selection: Drs. Marco Fumasoni, Giulia Ghedini and Ana Garona (GIMM).

Selection methods: The selection will be based upon: Cover letter (20%), CV (50%) and fit for the lab (30%). Candidates who score less than 80/100 points will be considered not eligible. 

Deadlines and application process: The call will be open for a mandatory minimum period of 10 working days, starting on October 15th 2024 and ending on October 28th 2024.

Notification of results: The list of admitted and excluded candidates as well as the final ranking list will be communicated within 90 days of the end of the application submission period, through e-mail to all admitted candidates.

Preliminary Hearing and Final Decision Deadline: After notification, all candidates have 10 working days to respond. Panel’s final decisions are pronounced within a period of 90 days, from application deadline.

Selection reserve list: Not applicable.

Fellowship contracting: The Fellowship is granted through the signature of a contract between GIMM and the selected fellow and after the fellow send the following mandatory documents: copy of identification document (in case of non-European citizens is mandatory the work visa / valid resident permit), document proving the required academic degree and the document proving the enrollment in a non-academic degree course.

For each Fellowship period an Activity Report must be prepared by the fellow as well as the Report by the supervisor.
