The GIMM – Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine is a pioneering Portuguese private research foundation with an ambitious vision for fundamental scientific exploration and its profound impact on global health and well-being. Founded in 2023, GIMM is the result of the merge of two leading research institutes: Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (iMM) and Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) and dedicates to unraveling the fundamental mysteries of life and aims to be at the forefront of transdisciplinary research. 

What GIMM seeks: At this moment, GIMM is looking for a Laboratory Technician to join the Cell Biology of Host – Pathogen Interaction Laboratory coordinated by Doctor Moritz Treeck, under the research project “Host-ile take over: understanding how P. falciparum gametocytes subvert their host cell during infection” funded by Wellcome Trust, under the supervision of Doctor Stephanie Nofal. The Laboratory Technician is expected to: 

  1. Provide support as a research assistant on the project investigating how the sexual stages of the malaria causing parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, are able to remodel their host cell ;
  2. Generate and characterise conditional knockout lines of candidate parasite exported effectors;
  3. Isolate and culture haematopoetic stem cells;
  4. Interact and work within a diverse group specialized in host-pathogen interactions. They will also have access to various training opportunities to develop new skills.

Profile of Candidate:

  1. Bachelor´s Degree in the Life Sciences;
  2. Experience working in a research lab;
  3. Background in Molecular Biology is essential;
  4. Experience in molecular cloning, parasite cell, imaging or flow cytometry is highly desirable;
  5. Capacity to work independently and collaboratively within the research group;
  6. Willingness to expand skills and develop professionally (an excellent opportunity for candidates considering pursuing a PhD in the future);
  7. Fluent spoken and written English is essential. 

What GIMM offers: GIMM will offer outstanding working conditions including a full time and unfixed-term employment contract predicted to start in January 2025 for the necessary period to execute the work plan. Gross monthly salary of 1.438,62€ in accordance with the project budget and internal regulations as well as Holidays and Christmas allowances subject to the current mandatory taxes accordingly to Portuguese Labor Law. A meal allowance will also be paid in the amount of 6€ per each working day.

Evaluation Criteria: Applications will be evaluated by Moritz Treeck, Caren Norden and Stephanie Nofal (all PhD’s) (GIMM), in accordance with the following method:

  • 1st Phase: Curricular evaluation (40%) and Motivation Letter (30%);
  • 2nd Phase: Interview (30%). Only the candidates who score at least 50% in 1st Phase, will be selected for Interview.

Results: Both admitted and excluded candidates list and final classification list shall be communicated to all admitted candidates through email.

Preliminary Hearing and Final Decision Deadline: After notification, all candidates have 10 working days to respond. Panel’s final decisions are pronounced within a period of 90 days, from application deadline.

The present call is exclusively aimed at filling the indicated vacancy and may be terminated until the homologation of the final candidates’ ranking list and expires with the respective occupation of the position on offer.
