The GIMM – Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine is a pioneering Portuguese private research foundation with an ambitious vision for fundamental scientific exploration and its profound impact on global health and well-being. Founded in 2023, GIMM is the result of the merge of two leading research institutes: Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (iMM) and Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) and dedicates to unraveling the fundamental mysteries of life and aims to be at the forefront of transdisciplinary research. 

What GIMM seeks: At this moment, GIMM is looking for a Laboratory Technician to join the Neuronal Responses to Bacterial Signals Laboratory coordinated by Ilana Gabanyi, under the research project Trafficking mechanisms and physiological factors mediating a direct gut microbiota-brain neuron interaction” funded by ERC-Horizon Europe / European Commission, to execute the following activities under the supervision of Ilana Gabanyi:

a) The Neuronal Responses to Bacterial Signals Laboratory is looking for a motivated candidate to help the projects we are developing to better understand the mechanism behind the communication between gut microbiota derived compounds and brain neurons, focusing on direct interactions and the external factors that can impact this communication known as the microbiota-gut-brain axis. We use mouse models and tools from different disciplines. The selected candidate will take care of the mouse colony and help the other lab members in their projects performing for example, animal perfusion, histological cuts and immunofluorescence staining.  This is a unique opportunity to join a project funded by the ERC and a starting group with lots of energy. Our goal is to create an inclusive, supportive, and motivating science environment where input from different expertise and background are welcome.

Profile of Candidate

  1. Bachelor’s degree (BSc) in Biology, Biochemistry, Neuroscience, Immunology, or related fields;
  2. Experience in working with rodents;
  3. Laboratory work proficiency;
  4. Interest in a long-term commitment;
  5. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  6. High motivation for conducting experiments;
  7. Enjoys interdisciplinary work;
  8. Willingness to interact with colleagues, team members, and collaborators;
  9. Enthusiasm for learning and developing new procedures.

What GIMM offers: GIMM offers an outstanding working conditions including a full time and unfixed-term employment contract predicted to start in April 2025 for the necessary period to execute the work plan. Gross monthly salary of 1.438,62€ in accordance with the project budget and internal regulations as well as Holidays and Christmas allowances subject to the current mandatory taxes accordingly to Portuguese Labor Law. A meal allowance will also be paid in the amount of 7.80€ per each working day.

Evaluation Criteria: Applications will be evaluated by Ilana Gabanyi (President of the Jury), Moritz Treeck and Giulia Ghedini (all PhD’s), in accordance with the following method:

  • The selection will be divided in 2 phases:

a) In the 1st phase, candidates will be scored in a scale 1-10 according to their CV (40%) and motivation letter (60%); only the candidates that score 7 or higher go to the second phase; 

b) The 2nd phase consists of a zoom interview. In certain cases, a 2nd in person interview can be conducted, if judged necessary by the evaluation committee.

Results: Both admitted and excluded candidates list and final classification list shall be communicated to all admitted candidates through email.

Preliminary Hearing and Final Decision Deadline: After notification, all candidates have 10 working days to respond. Panel’s final decisions are pronounced within a period of 90 days, from application deadline.

The present call is exclusively aimed at filling the indicated vacancy and may be terminated until the homologation of the final candidates’ ranking list and expires with the respective occupation of the position on offer.
