Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM) opens a call for TWO (2) research fellowship under the project “CENTAUR – Creating and refining whole-genome and core-genome typing schemas for pathogen surveillance”, com o apoio financeiro de “ISIDORe Joint Research Activities, União Europeia”.
Scientific Area(s): Bioinformatics.
Fellowship recipients / Admission requirements: Any National, foreign and stateless candidate(s) that fulfill the necessary conditions to be enrolled in a MSc degree course (in area (s) related to the work plan) can apply.
Applicants must hold the following requirements:
– Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Health Sciences, Biology, Biochemistry, Informatics, Biomedicine or related areas;
– Proficiency in working with the Linux operating system;
– Strong scripting skills in bash;
– Proficiency in English.
Although not mandatory selection criteria, the following will be considered an advantage:
– International experience of the candidate;
– Experience working with genomic and high-throughput sequencing data;
– Experience working on phylogenetic analysis.
Work Plan and Objectives:
– The selected candidates will join a multidisciplinary team within the Project, aiming to develop and apply high-throughput sequencing data analysis pipelines for bacterial identification, virulence factors, and antimicrobial resistance, as well as analysis methods and visualization of phylogenetic relationships incorporating other metadata;
– Active participation in the development of new analysis methods, specifically improving whole-genome multilocus sequence typing schemes;
– High-throughput sequencing data analysis for the characterization of outbreaks and microbial population evolution in both hospital and community settings;
– Analysis of high-throughput sequencing results for phylogenetic and population structure analyses of human pathogenic bacteria;
– Development of tools that generate analysis reports usable by epidemiologists and other healthcare professionals without advanced bioinformatics knowledge.
