The GIMM – Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine is a pioneering Portuguese private research foundation with an ambitious vision for fundamental scientific exploration and its profound impact on global health and well-being. Founded in 2023, GiMM is the result of the merge of two leading research institutes: Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (iMM) and Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) and dedicates to unraveling the fundamental mysteries of life and aims to be at the forefront of transdisciplinary research. 

What GIMM seeks: At this moment, GIMM is looking for a Researcher to join the Proteomics Unit coordinated by Minia Antelo, under the research project “GIMM-Care- Boosting Clinical Research for the Benefit of Society” (Teaming for Excellence – HORIZON-WIDERA-2022-ACCESS-01-01-two-stage), funded by European Commission, to execute the following activities under the supervision of Minia Antelo:

  1. Participate in all aspects of the proteomics workflow, including:
    • Advising researchers on sample preparation and acquisition methods for proteomics;
    • Teaching and guiding researchers on proteomics sample preparation;
    • Operating high-resolution LC-MS/MS systems;
    • Analyzing and interpreting proteomics data;
    • Communicating results clearly to researchers.
  2. Supervise and manage multiple proteomics projects;
  3. Optimize and develop new sample preparation and LC-MS/MS methods;
  4. Perform maintenance and troubleshooting of instruments, including liquid chromatographers and mass spectrometers;
  5. Provide technical support and training to users, including experimental design, protocol optimization, and data analysis;
  6. Maintain quality control and assurance for all LC-MS/MS instruments and experiments.

Profile of Candidate

  1. MSc degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related field (mandatory);
  2. 4 to 6 years of experience in a research lab setting;
  3. Prior experience in mass spectrometry-based proteomics is preferred but not mandatory;
  4. Familiarity with proteomics software tools (e.g., MaxQuant, Perseus, Skyline, DIA-NN, SpectroNaut, SpectroDive) is highly valued;
  5. Proficiency in programming languages and data analysis tools such as R or Python for data manipulation, statistical analysis, and visualization.
  6. Competence in using computers (both Mac and PC);
  7. Strong teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multi-user environment;
  8. High commitment to detail and troubleshooting capacity;
  9. Fluency in spoken and written English is required.

What GIMM offers: GIMM will offer outstanding working conditions including a full time and unfixed-term employment contract predicted to start in December 2024 for an estimated period of 12 (twelve) months.   Gross monthly salary of 2.500,00€ in accordance with the project budget and internal regulations as well as Holidays and Christmas allowances subject to the current mandatory taxes accordingly to Portuguese Labor Law. A meal allowance will also be paid in the amount of 6€ per each working day.

Evaluation Criteria: Applications will be evaluated by Minia Antelo (President of the Jury), José Rino and Joel Perez-Perri (all PhD’s), in accordance with the following method:

  • 1st Phase: Curricular evaluation (50%) and Motivation Letter (20%);
  • 2nd Phase: Interview (30%). Only the candidates who score at least 60% in 1st Phase, will be selected for Interview.

Results: Both admitted and excluded candidates list and final classification list shall be communicated to all admitted candidates through email.

Preliminary Hearing and Final Decision Deadline: After notification, all candidates have 10 working days to respond. Panel’s final decisions are pronounced within a period of 90 days, from application deadline.

The present call is exclusively aimed at filling the indicated vacancy and may be terminated until the homologation of the final candidates’ ranking list and expires with the respective occupation of the position on offer.
