EMBO Workshop Connects Cell Biology and Climate Science

Events

Last week, from April 13–16, the EMBO Workshop on Cell Biology and Climate Resilience took place at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, organized by Mónica Bettencourt‑Dias of the Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM). The event brought together around 100 participants, both in person and virtually, from around the globe to explore the intersection of cellular biology and climate science.

Experts in cell biology, medicine, ecology, evolution, engineering, and climate physics joined policymakers and funders to examine how insights at the cellular level can inform climate‑resilience strategies. The four‑day program featured keynote lectures, thematic panel discussions (covering plant biology, aquatic systems, health, and bioengineering), and collaborative sessions aimed at generating concrete, interdisciplinary action plans.

The workshop adopted a hybrid format, allowing virtual participants to live-stream the first two days of scientific sessions and engage directly with speakers. The final sessions were held in person only, fostering deeper interaction and co-creation of ideas.

This EMBO Workshop marked a significant step toward bridging disciplines and catalyzing innovative approaches to one of the most urgent global challenges of our time.
